The North Shore of Auckland is largely seen as a home to quiet suburbia. However it has had an important role in the growth of popular music in the city going back to as early as the 1920s. The seaside resort of Milford offered multiple spots where live music was on offer to entertain the small local populace and day trippers from the city centre, including one shaped like a pirate ship which stood next to a huge salt water swimming pool. In the century since, the Shore has had many stand-out musical venues and produced a large number of our biggest musical stars, including “North Shore Invasion” leaders the Screaming Meemees, lauded songwriter Don McGlashan, glam rockers Push Push, international superstar Lorde, and many more besides.
