Get Away is written for vocals, saxophone, clavinet, electric guitar, bass, drums and percussion.
Intro/Verse/Chorus/Bridge
Get Away has a simple two-chord repeating pattern throughout the song. The lead saxophone motif opens the song, which is followed by the chorus. The chorus adds harmonised backing vocals. A different saxophone melody is used for each chorus, often with harmony lines.
The guitar has a syncopated strum typical of reggae, with the drums demonstrating a one-drop beat which accents on beats two and four, instead of the typical beats one and three in most popular types of music (when in 4/4 meter). Interest is maintained throughout the song by adding small, ad lib guitar lead, clavinet, percussion fills and occasional fermatas, for example, before the chorus.
The biggest variation happens in the bridge which adds layers of analog delay to the vocals to give an echoing effect, typical of early dub music. Additionally, the rhythm section pulls back, to help emphasise the harmonised vocals. The lack of beat makes this section less dense, giving a dreamy feeling before returning to the chorus.
