Goldenhorse

In the first two years of the 21st century, there was talk of a fresh, pure pop scene in Auckland city, and it revolved around Goldenhorse, a group fronted by Kirsten Morrell, a flame-haired singer with a transcendent voice.

The inception of Goldenhorse came from Kirsten Morrell and Geoff Maddock. The two met when Maddock was still playing with the band Bressa Creeting Cake, and the two talents soon started playing together. As recounted in a 2007 Scoop article, “... Geoff and Kirsten had to get a band ready at the last minute for a friend’s wedding; the beginnings of Goldenhorse stirred.”

Trivia:

Maybe Tomorrow, written by Kirsten Morrell and Geoff Maddock, was the most played song on NZ radio in 2003.

When Vincent Hine joined the group on bass, Ben King – who had played bass to that point – switched to guitar duties.

In 2023 Kirsten Morrell revealed to AudioCulture that Tim Finn had “invested” in their 2002 debut album Riverhead, loaning recording equipment to the band in exchange for “points” off the finished album.
