Jon Stevens

Jon Stevens got his start in the music business at the age of 15, working alongside his sister at the EMI vinyl pressing plant in Wellington.

He was the youngest of 11 children born to a Māori mother and a Scottish father who had jumped ship in 1946. In 1978, his sister and her friend talked him into entering a talent quest at Quinn’s Post Tavern, Upper Hutt, which he won on the night with Renee Geyer’s ‘Heading In The Right Direction’. Jon’s older brother (by 13 years) Frankie Stevens was already successful on the cabaret circuit in London and Las Vegas and Jon won the final with one of his brother’s songs.
