Chris Cudby

aka Power Nap, Miami Beach, Futuresports, Golden Axe (with Daif King)

Chris Cudby was half of synth-punk act Golden Axe, alongside Daif King. The pair often performed in the middle of the dancefloor or even out in the carpark. Other times, they played within surrealistic structures (a duck head; an igloo emitting smoke). Cudby’s solo project Power Nap saw him become an in-demand act on the local live circuit, even while he took on new roles as editor of UnderTheRadar, and a host of 95bFM’s Freak The Sheep show.

Cudby and Daif King both attended Birkenhead College, but they only started making music together after Cudby had left for university. They shared an interest in noise-based and outsider music from New Zealand, Japan and the US, as avid listeners of bFM’s Solar Furnace hour, and customers of cult music store Crawlspace Records. They bought a Yamaha cassette four-track and began experimenting.

Trivia:

Cudby had a part-time job at Pizza Pizza in central Auckland. Not only did the restaurant sell pizzas, but it also hosted a run of gigs. This led to Cudby being amongst the crowd that managed to squeeze into the small space to watch The White Stripes play at Pizza Pizza in 2000.

The cover of Liquid Bacon was supplied by Imogen Taylor, who was also a member of The Ruby Suns and subsequently became a lauded NZ painter.

In 2012, Golden Axe released a cover of ‘Sexual Angel’ by cult Wellington act Cortina. The vocals were provided by rising indie star Princess Chelsea.

Chris Cudby is the cousin of Shihad manager Gerald Dwyer and DJ / Broadcaster Nick Dwyer.

Daif King moved into metal music as Blood Knight, and formed Stälker with Chris Calavrias, ex- Razorwyre. This was hinted at earlier when he and Cudby had a side project called The Silver Scrolls, playing Black Sabbath covers.
