Superette

Superette sounded on the surface like the perfect alternative power-pop trio, all fuzzed guitars and big melodies. However, there was always a discordant side to the group too, in their songs’ subject matter and the dark humour shown in their music videos. For a moment in the mid-90s, they were Flying Nun’s shining hope before the label’s owner, Mushroom Records, pulled the rug out from under them.

It wasn’t the first time that machinations at Mushroom Records/Flying Nun had affected the career of lead singer Dave Mulcahy. He started out in Christchurch group, Jean-Paul Sartre Experience (JPSE). Their early music varied widely from indie pop (such as Mulcahy’s ‘Firetime’ or the single ‘I Like Rain’) through to the creepy, off-kilter sound of ‘Flex’. JPSE signed to Flying Nun and Mulcahy relocated with them to Auckland in 1989.
