Odyssey

A long time ago (1971) in a mysterious place far, far away (Dunedin) a rock’n’roll band was born. They called themselves the NZ Fantasy Band. A mere three in number, Jeff Stribling (drums), Ronnie Harris (guitar), and Bill Kearns (bass) had fantasies alright: big bold rock dreams. Still unless you were a local who frequented a long-forgotten nightclub called Cinderella’s where NZ Fantasy were the house band you won’t have heard of them.

At Cinderella’s, Jeff, Ronnie, and Bill provided a smorgasbord of tunes by Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, The Who, Steppenwolf, Uriah Heep, et al. Amid this standard fare the lads would sneak in half a dozen originals. Both the NZ Fantasy Band and Cinderella’s would soon become lost in the mists of time. But this was just the beginning.

“The boys are back” is the headline on this 1976 article in The Press, Christchurch. Odyssey is now in “the Kiss field,” wearing platform boots and leather. “Without an image, music is boring from the public’s point of view.” The band is aiming for younger audiences.
