Lance Ferguson

There’s a magical video on YouTube called simply Lanu – The Double Sunrise. Lance Ferguson – musician, DJ, producer, bandleader and passionate collector of vinyl – starts the clip by telling us that 60 years before, back in 1956, his Tongan grandfather Bill Wolfgramm released New Zealand’s first LP, South Sea Rhythm, on the Tanza label. He tells us that somewhere nearby at the same time, the gorgeous flying boat Aranui was taking wing on the famed Coral Route, the world’s “most romantic flightpath”.

Lance then explores exotica, a musical style that was created and popularised by Martin Denny in the 1950s, one which drew from that romance of the Pacific in the mid-20th Century, and from the Hawaiian musical craze that swept the world, including Aotearoa. This all was the inspiration for The Double Sunrise, his third solo album, released under the alias Lanu.
