David Curtis

Times were certainly a-changing in 1970. Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin were united in the “27 Club” after overdosing and The Beatles were having a lingering swansong with ‘The Long and Winding Road’, their last hit single as a group. The pop charts were a pick’n’mix of styles with something for everyone.

Hogsnort Rupert’s Original Flagon Band topped the NZ Listener’s chart in late August that year, ahead of Cliff Richard, The Beatles, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. But at No.5 was an artist who differed markedly from the other belters and balladeers: the singer David Curtis, a 13-year-old Wellington schoolboy.
