Craig Williamson

aka Lamp of the Universe, Dead Shrine

The mind-expansionist records of Craig Williamson waft from head-nodding to head-banging, from kneaded by velvet paws to gripping the lion’s hackles. It is multi-layered, multi-instrumental music to soundtrack the arabesque curlicues and swirls of incense smoke as it evanesces ever-upwards.

Craig has long embraced metaphysical, Eastern-influenced psychedelia – though he started out with a darker edge. Raised in Hamilton, he reckons he’s always viewed the world through a Hamilton lens. He grew up with the mainstream rock and pop of a typical happy home, but at intermediate he suddenly discovered Iron Maiden, AC/DC, ZZ Top, and other rock and metal that “just seemed dangerous to me.” His school mates played in a terrible band – but it was the coolest thing, even if they sucked – and it inspired him to pick up an instrument.
