High Dependency Unit

aka HDU

High Dependency Unit are Neil Phillips (bass, guitar), Tristan Dingemans (guitar, vocals), and Constantine (Dino) Karlis on drums, percussion, synth, and samples. They all grew up in sunny Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay but shifted to Ōtepoti Dunedin for the musical vibe. There, they created HDU, a sonic behemoth that was heavy in the way of The Gordons before them, and Jakob who came after.

The day I speak to Dingemans, autumn has just arrived with an Antarctic blast, and he is well wrapped up, which answers my first question. Does he still live in Dunedin? Yes, he does, and he continues to explore the outer reaches of heavy, through his musical outlet Kāhu.
