Paddy Burgin

Growing up in the 1960s in rural Canterbury, Paddy Burgin envied the city kids who he imagined must be living far more interesting lives. And yet there was enough music on the Burgin’s Swannanoa farm to set him on a course as a musician and instrument maker that has led him through most of his working life.

There were records, and there was radio. He took piano lessons. Already tuned in to folk music by his parents’ records of Burl Ives and William Clauson, hearing the Kingston Trio sealed his fate. The song he especially remembers is ‘Greenback Dollar’. Its lyrics seemed to advertise a career and an attitude: “I don’t give a damn about a greenback a-dollar, spend it fast as I can, a wailin’ song and a good guitar, the only things that I understand …”
