Bon Marche/ The Newz

Bon Marche and The Newz were Christchurch bands active from 1977 to 1983, sharing most members and evolving from Bon Marche into The Newz in 1980. They held a residency at the Aranui Tavern, a pub located past Linwood on the way to New Brighton. It had a capacity of at least 500 but often packed well beyond that.

The two bands were unusual in that they wrote and performed many of their own songs, and they strived for technical excellence to rival international touring bands.

Trivia:

During the Newz' national tour in winter, 1980, the opening night at Billy the Club (formerly the Rock Theatre) was something of a disaster. The hired PA collapsed on opening act Shoes This High and the show was cancelled.

On the TV show Ready to Roll, the band performed a cover of the Elton Motello (aka Alan Ward) song Jet Boy, Jet Girl. Motello's recording used the same backing track as the Plastic Bertrand hit Ça Plane Pour Moi

In August 1980, while vocalist Simon Darke was out of action for a couple of months after a throat operation, the rest of The Newz continued performing as The Eels, including a season a Doodles nightclub on Lichfield Street
