Chet O'Connell


Over the years Chet O’Connell has been dedicatedly plying his craft, supporting his family as a musician by touring New Zealand and overseas, and taking part in a host of recording projects.

He has been Midge Marsden’s go-to guitarist for nearly 25 years, worked with light-classical touring show Operatunity, produced nine of his own albums, and attended the Norfolk Island Country Music Festival over a dozen times.

Among the albums Chet has played on are his wife Melissa’s Stranded in Paradise, the Galley Slaves’ Hands Behind Your Back, Shane Cortese’s Jukebox 58, and albums by Chris Powley, Chris Skinner, Dennis Marsh, Glen Moffatt, Gray Bartlett, John Rowles, Midge Marsden, Malcolm McCallum, Topp Twins and Shane Hales.

Awards that Chet O’Connell has been given by the the Variety Artists’ Club include 1995 Top Instrumentalist Award, the 2006 Rielly Comedy Award with Chris Powley, the 2011 Top Instrumentalist Award, and the 2016 Pub Charity Top Male Artist.

Chet has performed many times at the free Rotorua Lakeside Festival and has attended the Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival from its inception in 1989.

In 2021 he played on Operatunity’s Tennessee Waltz Tour, and has since toured many times with the company.
