Chris van de Geer

Chris van de Geer came to prominence as the guitarist for Second Child and Stellar*. He simultaneously built his reputation in the studio, twice winning music engineer of the year at the NZ Music Awards. He has worked across a broad range of genres as an engineer and producer, with anyone from the poppiest pop acts through to the heaviest modern metal and hardcore punk.

Van de Geer’s earliest interaction with a musical instrument was almost catastrophic. As a toddler, he climbed his mother’s piano and accidentally toppled a vase. “My mum was in the kitchen and heard the crash, so she came in. The vase was smashed and I was lying face down in a pool of blood, so she grabbed a towel and put it on my face. She thought I’d lost an eye because the cut goes right over one cheek and across to the other eyebrow. She took me to Middlemore Hospital and I had to have over forty stitches. Luckily there was a young woman doctor who was a talented plastic surgeon so was able to deal with it, though I ended up with a scar for life.”
